LAURINBURG, N.C. — A McColl man is being held in a North Carolina jail after police say he stole from Walmart, led officers on a 130 mph chase and drove back into South Carolina.

Jon Paul Pearce, 42, of 409 N. Main St., is charged with careless and reckless driving; driving 130 mph in a 70-mph zone; driving 115 mph in a 45-mph work zone and felonious fleeing to elude arrest. He was also served with three warrants for larceny, according to Laurinburg Assistant Police Chief Cliff Sessoms. His total bond was $12,500.

Sessoms said officers received a call at about 8:15 p.m. from Walmart’s security team, who said Pearce had fled the store in a blue Mustang with silver stripes. Police began chasing the vehicle after spotting it on U.S. 15-501, but Pearce took an on-ramp for U.S. 74 West, soon reaching speeds of 130 mph.

Sessoms said Pearce then merged onto N.C. 79 heading toward South Carolina, but lost control and wrecked soon after crossing the state line.

Pearce “waived extradition,” Sessoms said, and was taken back to North Carolina, where he was charged.

It is not clear what Pearce is accused of taking from Walmart or how he wrecked his vehicle.

Sessoms said no one was injured in the wreck.
