LAURINBURG, N.C. — A Bennettsville man was in critical condition following a fight last Thursday that resulted in a Laurinburg man’s arrest, according to police.

Charles Shawn McPherson, of 417 Hood St., Laurinburg, was arrested Friday afternoon and charged with one count of felonious assault inflicting serious bodily injury, Assistant Police Chief Cliff Sessoms said. McPherson was jailed under a $30,000 secured bond.

McPherson punched 40-year-old Calvin Zimmerman in the head, Sessoms said, knocking him down.

“We think (Zimmerman’s) head struck the pavement,” Sessoms said.

Zimmerman, who lives on Craig Circle in Bennettsville, was brought to Scotland Memorial Hospital in a private vehicle at about 11 p.m., Sessoms said. Officers were called to the hospital and found Zimmerman with “serious head injuries.”

According to a spokesperson for Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg, Zimmerman was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte that night. Sessoms said Zimmerman remained at that hospital on Friday.

About an hour prior to the call from the hospital, police were called to McPherson’s home where several people claimed Zimmerman had “been causing problems,” according to Sessoms.

“It was an ongoing altercation that began at another location and carried out onto the street and sidewalk area in front of the home,” he said.

By the time officers arrived, Zimmerman had left the home.

Sessoms said he does not expect additional charges to be filed.
