Julius Freeman, 44, of Basin Street in Cheraw, is the man authorities say attacked the psychiatrist on Monday at Tri-County Mental Health in Chesterfield.
That action, said Chesterfield Police Chief Eric Hewitt, prompted Freeman’s probation officer to intervene. Freeman was shot and killed inside the facility.
The incident occurred just before noon. Coworkers report hearing serveral shots, but no one else was seriously injured.
The investigation is being led by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and assisted by the Chesterfield Police Department and the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office.
Chesterfield County Sheriff Robert Lee said the probation officer that shot Freeman was not one of his deputies. “No. He is a state employee. He works for Probation, Pardon and Parole,” said Lee.
Authorities say the officer was outside the room while the patient was being seen. However, when the officer heard Freeman yelling at the psychiatrist he entered the room to find the psychiatrist being physically attacked.
