Three people were arrested Tuesday night for the murder of Jamal Gainey, 25, who was shot and killed March 16 while parked outside a convenience store in downtown Cheraw. A fourth suspect is still at large.
The arrests came just four days after Gainey’s family and friends marched down Second Street, from the site of the murder to the Cheraw Police Department, urging anyone with information about the incident to please step forward.
Cheraw Police Chief Keith Thomas said the arrests of La-Porche Burns, Zakariya Hughes and Jayvis “Ruga” James Jackson involved the assistance of bloodhounds, the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office, the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office and a SLED helicopter. Each of the three have each been charged with murder.
Around 9 p.m. Tuesday, officers with the Cheraw Police Department were expecting to find Jackson at his mother’s home. Instead, they learned he was at a night club near Darlington.
When authorities arrived at the club, Jackson fled and the search began. He was eventually found near a ball field in the Centerville area of Darlington, said Thomas.
Hughes was found hiding at a friend’s home in Dovesville, and Burns was at home when officers arrested her.
Thomas, who promised the Gainey family at Friday’s rally he would “find out the truth,” said the search continues for a fourth person believed to be involved with this crime.
Gainey was shot once in the upper chest, at very close range, around 11 p.m. He tried to drive himself to the hospital, but those riding with him had to take over the wheel.
He was pronounced dead at Chesterfield General Hospital by Chesterfield County Coroner Kip Kiser shortly after midnight.
