Police say a man accused of shooting his girlfriend five times at close range last week has been charged with attempted murder.
Tayjha Marie Davis, 23, survived the shooting last Thursday and was able to identify her assailant as her boyfriend, 30-year-old Ronnie Campbell Self, Cheraw’s interim police chief said.
“She is very, very lucky to be alive,” interim Chief Keith Thomas said. “She was shot at close range with a .38 pistol.”
Davis’ friends were sitting on the porch when the shooting began inside her home at the John Motley apartment complex, said Thomas.
“They heard the shots and told her to run,” Thomas said. “He shot at them too.”
Neither of the friends were injured, but paramedics took Davis to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Thomas said her condition is improving and it is possible she will be released later in the week.
Self has been charged with two counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, possession of a firearm by a felon and attempted murder.
Thomas said Wednesday morning that Self remains in custody.
