Friends of the late Cheraw High School basketball coach Terrance Ford have launched an effort to rename Stadium Road in his honor.

Ford, a teacher and coach, was a father of three. He died of a heart attack earlier this year at age 34.

“It was actually David Rainwater’s idea,” said Ford’s widow, Angel, who also works at Cheraw High School.

Rainwater is an officer for the Cheraw Police Department. His son, Trevor, and Ford’s son, T.J., both age 6, “are great friends,” said Ford.

“David and his family have spent a lot of time with the boys, especially since Terrance passed. It’s their idea. I didn’t even know about until Monday,” said Ford. “But I think it’s very nice.”

Stadium Road is the road that leads to the high school’s gymnasium, football and baseball fields. It also serves as the school’s main entrance.

Chesterfield County Superintendent Harrison Goodwin informed members of the school board Monday evening about the quest to have the name changed.

“It is a county road, so County Council will have to make that call,” said Goodwin.
