The current exhibit at the Mary G. Burr Art Gallery offers an evening of visual flash backs for the older crowd, and an opportunity for the younger generation to get into the groove of the 1960s and 70s.

The exhibit, sponsored by the Cheraw Arts Commission (CAC), and assembled by Lindsay Bennett, executive director for the CAC, is a collection of memorabilia ranging from Tom Jones album covers to crocheted vests; the kind everybody’s grandmother used to make.

An opening reception for the exhibit was held Tuesday evening at the Cheraw Community Center. Guests enjoyed music by the Doors, and other famous groups from that era. There were also a couple of interactive art works that call for audience participation, a trend that was very popular in the 1960s.

“We wanted to have a retro feel to the event,” said Bennett. “We’ve incorporated aspects of the culture of the time that includes the music, the art, and the fashion of that era.”

“We have had a tremendous response to for this event. We actually got more things than we had space to exhibit.”

The CAC has sponsored similar exhibits in the past couple of years, but this one is very different from the others, said Bennett. “We are grateful to all those who loaned their keepsakes, and encourage everyone to see the exhibit during the rest of the month.”

Bennett hopes the exhibit will help boost excitement for several events the CAC has planned for next week.

Participants in the CAC Adult Art Night, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, will have the opportunity to turn they old jewelry into something new and “groovy.” The will be held at Lady Southern Interior Design at 104 Duvall Street in Cheraw. To register, call the CAC at 843-537-8420, extension 12.

There will be two performances of The Ugly Ducking, by Porkchop Productions at the Theatre on the Green Wednesday, Jan. 29. Shows begin at 9:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Student tickets are $3. Adults are admitted without charge.

And the grand finale for the month of January will be the musical performance by California Dreaming Thursday, Jan. 30. The show starts at 7 p.m. at the Theatre on the Green. Tickets are $15 and are available at the Cheraw Community Center.
