Retired First Sergeant James Ellis Hammond, 89, of Temple Hills, Md., died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014 in Greenbelt.


Hammond was a native of Cheraw and was the son of the late Robert and Ann Eliza Hammond. He was born April 22, 1924, the eldest son of nine siblings.


He graduated from Coulter Junior College and served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1969. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He worked almost 20 years in the construction industry as a project superintendent with Davis Construction.


Hammond was preceded in death by his wife, Claudia Carter Hammond, and seven siblings.


He is survived by a sister, Dorothy Ellison; nieces, Cynthia Ellison and Janice Hammond; a devoted cousin and caregiver, Mary Adrienne Hammond; cousins, Wilford E. Hammond, Robert C. Hammond and Lenora Powe; and a host of other relatives and friends.


A graveside service with full military honors was held on Jan. 17 at Foundry Hill Cemetery.
