LAURINBURG, N.C. — A South Carolina man was arrested Monday and charged with the rape of a 19-year-old woman, according to the Laurinburg Police Department.
Jahrel Torrence Lester, 21, of 1237 Donna Lane in Bennettsville, S.C., was charged with second degree rape, second degree sex offense, kidnapping, assault on a female and communicating threats, according to Assistant Police Chief Cliff Sessoms. Lester is being held in the Scotland County jail under a $150,500 bond, $500 of which was assigned for outstanding warrants of vandalism, breaking and entering and communicating threats, Sessoms said.
The Laurinburg Exchange does not identify victims of sexual assault.
According to a statement from the police department, a detective went to Scotland Memorial Hospital and spoke with the victim who said that on Saturday, around 8 p.m., Lester dropped by her house for a visit.
“The victim stated that she was assaulted by Mr. Lester,” Laurinburg Police Chief Darwin Williams said. “He also physically punched her about the head and face.”
The victim tried to leave many times but Lester threatened to hurt her and at one point held her down, using a pillow in an attempt to suffocate her, according to the statement. Several hours later he let her go and she fled to a friend’s house, where she called the police.
