The annual Knights of Columbus State Free Throw competition was held in Columbia last Saturday and four contestants from Cheraw participated.
Jonathan Gordan finished with the runner-up trophy in the 11-year old boys age group, as he made 19 out of 25 free throws. Gordan claimed the state title in the 10-year old age group last year, but he fell one shot short this time around.
Fabian Brown also captured the runner-up spot in the 14-year old boys age division, as he connected on 18 of his 25 attempts. Brown also missed out by one shot, as he duplicated his runner-up finish from last year in the 13-year old age group.
The two newcomers to the state competition were Devin Gillespie and Boyce Brock. Gillespie competed in the 9-year old age group and he finished in the middle of the pack by making 8 of his 25 free throws. Brock made 11 of his 25 attempts and he finished in the top half of the 10-year old boys age division.
There were actually seven free throw artists that qualified, but Anthony Waymyers, Ashanti Marshall and Shikeim Lindsey could not participate due to them playing for Cheraw in the 12-and-under Eastern District Basketball Tournament.
