RUBY - Arnater Nivens, 83, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006 at Chesterfield General Hospital.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6 from Rock Spring Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs. Leroy Dubois, Johnny R. Ellis and Woodrow McManus officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Nivens was a son of the late Grafton and Nettie Harrell Nivens. He worked 19 years as a freight carrier prior to his retirement from Bo-Buck Mills, Inc. Mr. Nivens served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Ruby Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge 75. Mr. Nivens enjoyed gardening and had a fondness for the outdoors.

Surviving are his wife, Viola Chapman Nivens; three sons, Cornelius (Marti) Nivens of Ruby, Grady (Wanda) Nivens of Charlotte, N.C., and Jimmy (Valerie) Nivens of Ruby; three daughters, Devenure Shamsid-Deen of Concord, N.C., Valeria A. (Jacque) Johnson of Charlotte, and Sheryll Marshall of Cheraw; a special granddaughter, Sherice Nivens of Charlotte; a sister, Margaret Threatt of Charlotte; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Dean Nivens; a sister, Virtle Nivens; and three brothers, Wilbert Nivens, Jerome Nivens and Jehu Nivens.

Arrangements were entrusted to Flemming Funeral Home - Chesterfield.
