Leading the stats for Cheraw was John Weeks who shot an 84. Jake Crouse followed closely behind shooting an 88 for the course. Rounding up the rest of the tournament squad were Alex Lanter, 94, Jacob Morrell, 103, and Jarvis Hooks, 104.
“John Weeks played pretty good at the tournament. He didn’t putt well but he hit the ball well and has shown his abilities to finish in the upper 70’s,” commented Cheraw Head Coach Harry Newsome.
Newsome commented on the performances of his team and held high regards for all the Brave golfers.
“Jake didn’t do to bad either he just had one hole that hurt his score, it happens. Jarvis hooks played really well. He has demonstrated at practice that he can shoot in the upper 30’s to lower 40’s.”
Newsome also gave allusion to what his plans are for the season and where he would like to see his team perform. “One of our goals is to shoot 340 as a team. The other is to try and win this region, but our main competition is Aynor and they are a solid program.”
Newsome, holds high hopes for his team heading into the rest of the season and looks to work on tightening up some loose ends before Thursdays match against Marlboro County.
“We are going to practice on the mental aspect of the game for Marlboro County. I didn’t feel we were mentally ready, and I felt the players got nervous, but they have to be able to play when they are nervous. It was the first match of the season so I feel that they will be better with that behind them.”
Cheraw will be traveling to Marlboro County today to take on the Bulldogs at 4:30 p.m. Come out and support the Cheraw High golf team in their bid for the 2010 region championship.
