Coach Burney Bourne led Cheraw to its first State Football Title in 1979. Thirty years later, he is now the head coach of the Waccamaw Warriors and returned to Cheraw in a first round 2A state playoff game this past Friday night to play the Braves. The homecoming night was not very warm as the Braves toppled the Warriors by the score of 34-7. The Braves kept the Warriors out of the end zone until the 2:45 mark of the fourth quarter. Warrior star running back, Gibbs, had a 52-yard run from scrimmage down to the goal line. He carried it in from the one yard line on the next play to make the final score 34-7. After leading by the score of 14-0 at the break, the Braves opened the third quarter by marching down the field on their first possession and scoring when Malcolm Hunter connected with Marcellus Dunn on the touch down pass for a 20-0 lead at the 7:42 mark. Jonathan White split the upright with the P.A.T. for the 21-0 advantage. Chad Wilkes went over the 1100 yards mark for the season and scored his second touch down of the game with 10:33 left in the fourth quarter to give the Braves a 27-0 margin going into the final minutes. The defense of the Braves continued to hold the Warriors in check and the Braves had a touch down pass to Darius Little negated because of an illegal motion penalty. Nevertheless, Wilkes connected once again with Marcellus Dunn on a 10 yard scoring strike to complete a drive that covered 44 yards in 10 plays. Jonathan White was good on the point after and that concluded the scoring for the Braves. The Braves were impressive and dominating in the victory. Unofficially, the Braves came away with 19 first downs and over 420 yards in total offense. This was a good way to start a run in the state playoffs. The Second round play for the Braves will be held at Silver Bluff Stadium. Silver Bluff defeated Bishop England to set up the match up against the Braves. Fans are encouraged to support the Braves by traveling to the game this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. Congratulations to all of the Braves for moving on to the second round.
