CHERAW - Daniel Lee Tillman Jr., 84, died Saturday, March 25, 2006.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 27 from First Presbyterian Church, Cheraw. Burial with military honors followed in Saint David's Cemetery.

Born in Cheraw, Mr. Tillman was a son of the late Lena Amos Tillman and Daniel Lee Tillman Sr. He graduated from Cheraw High School and attended Clemson Agricultural and Mechanical College until he was called into the United States Army during World War II, serving in the European Theatre. Also, he served in Korea during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Tillman was a partner and owner for 56 years of Dan L. Tillman and Sons Insurance and Real Estate Company, which was established by his father in 1926. 

Mr. Tillman was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Cheraw, and had served as Deacon, Elder, Treasurer and Clerk of Sessions. He was a former president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and president of the Cheraw Kiwanis Club. Mr. Tillman served 40 years as treasurer of the Cheraw Country Club and received a life membership. He also served as an officer of Five Oaks Post of the American Legion. Mr. Tillman served on the advisory board of First Citizens Bank of Cheraw for 40-plus years. He also served as the treasurer of the Cheraw Recreation Committee in its beginning.

Mr. Tillman was an avid sports fan who played golf, basketball, baseball and tennis in school. He adored watching his five grandchildren compete in sports and was a faithful follower of his beloved Clemson Tigers. He served as the County IPTAY Representative for many years.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Ruth Raines Tillman of Cheraw; two sons, Daniel Lee (Karen) Tillman III and William Raines “Bill” (Charlene) Tillman Sr. of Cheraw; five grandchildren, Daniel Lee Tillman IV, Carolyn Marsch Tillman, Robert Blake Tillman, William Raines Tillman Jr. and Benjamin Charles Tillman all of Cheraw; a sister, Virginia Watts of Goldsboro, N.C.; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Francis Tillman, and a sister, Deeda T. Sessoms.
