CHESTERFIELD - It has been a long awaited process for the Chesterfield County Family Court System to have its very own space to hold family court hearings. Just like putting things in the right place, the new family courtroom inside the Chesterfield County Courthouse on Main Street seems to fit right in.
On Mar. 12, Jay Hodge, President of Chesterfield County Bar and Fourth Circuit Court Solicitor, held a dedication ceremony in honor of the new addition to the Chesterfield County Courthouse and to those family court judges who sit on the bench.
Opening the ceremony with an invocation by Ronald Thurman, Chesterfield County Administrator, and the welcoming Hodge, it seems that the future looks a little brighter for the families of Chesterfield County, as well as the judicial system. The new facility is designed for better security and has many other assets as well.
"I am pleased to stand here before you in the new Chesterfield County Family Courtroom today. We have something we can be very proud of," said Hodge.
"What this courtroom signifies is more than brick and mortar, I believe this courtroom shows the accomplishments we have made," said the Honorable Judge Roger Henderson, Family Court. Henderson went further to say, "This courtroom is just as nice as any courtroom I have ever been in."
The Honorable Paul Burch, Resident Circuit Judge of the Fourth Judicial Circuit was guest speaker and delivered the dedicatory address. He also stated, "We've come a long way baby, but we got a long way to go."
The Fourth Circuit Family Court Judges are the Honorable Judge Roger Henderson, Honorable Judge James A. Spruill, III, and Honorable Judge Jamie Lee Murdock.
Also, on the first floor of the courthouse, there is a new multi-purpose room that was also added to accommodate the jurors and other events. In the past, jury members had to cram into a smaller room during a trial to reach a verdict. Now, the verdict is in, and there is ample space as well as a positive beginning for the Chesterfield County Family Court System.
