Flames were “through the roof and in the trees” when firefighters reached a house fire on State Road around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, said Capt. Chris Sellers of the Cheraw Fire Department. “The fire was reported by a passerby.”
The owner of the home, Paige Hill, was not home at the time and no one was injured, according to the fire department. While looking at the ruins of her home and the mark of the blaze in the trees Tuesday afternoon, Hill said, “It’s a blessing it rained yesterday.”
Her house was destroyed.
The heat from the fire, “radiant heat,” said Sellers, melted the shutters on the house next door.
Nineteen firefighters were on the scene for nearly three hours, making sure the fire was completely extinguished. The cause of the fire, said Sellers, is still under investigation.
