Janie Johnson and her husband have lived at 47 Evergreen Street for only three and a half years, but she has already transformed the house and grounds to have a very pleasing image with some very choice plants.
Out by the street she has planted three Crepe Myrtles, two of them deep rose, and a white one in the middle to brighten the grouping. Closer to the house she has several plants that work together to create a tropical feel. She has several palms that have a beautiful grey green foliage with a big rounded mass. Nearby are several Elephant Ears and their large deep green leaves are a delightful complement to the billowing mass of the palms. Also nearby are some Angel Trumpets and Brugmansia, that started blooming last April and are still blooming nicely. Each evening the huge buds open about 8 to 8:30 p.m. They can sit on their porch and watch them open. The intense white of the blossoms are showy long after it is dark. One evening there were 10 blossoms. The blossoms stay open until about 9 a.m. the next morning, about the time the sun hits them. They only bloom once but new buds are always rapidly forming to take over the show.
On her front sitting porch, she has a large houseplant with arrow-shaped leaves, Syngonium. Janie got a start off of her mother’s original plant. She knows, that if anything should ever happen to her mother, that plant will always be there on her sitting porch to give her comfort and fond memories.
There are Day Lilies across the front of her house that have been bloomed all summer. Behind them is a shrub of white Confederate Rose that blooms each spring. She also has a low shrub of flowering almond for spring color.
On the north side of her porch is a small Encore Azalea, a double rose form with white markings. She has moved this particular shrub three times but now it is in its permanent home. When her brother passed away, the azaleas were a gift at the funeral. Now it is a living memorial to her brother and happily blooms away each spring and fall. Nearby is a new hybrid Spiderwort plant. The flowers have three distinctive blue petals with showy stamens in the center. It’s a very compact plant with lots of buds on it that blooms from spring to fall.
Janie says she got her interest in gardening from her grandmother. She remembers helping her a lot in her garden. Now Janie is considered the expert in her family and lots of family members come to her for information about plants. It’s a treasure to have a grandmother that has influenced so many people to love plants.
