Brandon Boone, a fourth grade student at Cheraw Intermediate School, was honored at the South Carolina State Fair Oct. 17 as one of the winners of the 24th annual SC Greatest Grandparent Essay Contest.

This contest is sponsored by NBSC, WIS-TV and WMHK radio.

Students are asked to explain in 75 words or less why their grandparent should be named “The Grandparent of the Year.” One grandmother and one grandfather are selected from each age division---ages 7-10, 11-13, and 14-18. Boone nominated his grandmother, Elise Barrington.

He and his grandmother were invited to the special awards ceremony at the state fair, where Boone and the other winners read their winning essays. Each winning grandparent received a 22 in. flatscreen color television and a plaque.

Over 20,000 entries were submitted to this year’s contest.

Boone’s teacher is Polly Atkinson.
