Chesterfield County United Way Director Margaret Mitchell, and Harrison Goodwin, Superintendent of the Chesterfield County School System, kicked off the 2013 United Way Campaign at the principals’ meeting Feb. 19.
Goodwin opened by offering a challenge to all schools to reach 100 percent participation level. He stated he is not asking for lots and lots of dollars, but would like to see the school system attain a 100 percent giving rate. Goodwin said Plainview Elementary School has been recognized for doing just that the past five to six years.
The district’s campaign recognized individual schools for their contributions, based on percentage of participation and per capita giving. Contributions could be made by cash, check or payroll deduction as designated on pledge cards.
School district employees do a lot for the youth of Chesterfield County, said Mitchell. “Participating in United Way is how they can help the community ensure that families in need have resources, so that students are ready to learn even during these tough economic times.”
The United Way campaign ended March 15, 2013. However, some schools could opt to end the campaigns earlier. A campaign coordinator was chosen in each school and office.
United Way of Chesterfield County is a nonprofit organization supporting health and human service programs in our community. United Way strives to improve the lives of local residents by raising funds through an annual community wide campaign. United Way of Chesterfield County is governed by a local volunteer Board of Directors which ensures the organization is run efficiently and effectively.
Each agency receiving help through United Way must submit an application for services. The application is reviewed by the United Way Board of Directors for approval. Agencies must meet appropriate guidelines set by the board of directors in order to be approved for services.
