CHERAW — Cheraw Fire Department and Cheraw Rescue personnel responded to a one-vehicle accident on East Market Street last week.

According to Cheraw Fire Chief John L. Melton, the driver of the vehicle was traveling towards Cheraw when the car left the road, went down an embankment and then hit a tree. The vehicle was left suspended in the trees. The driver was unable to exit the car because of damage to the driver’s door.

“ This was an unusual extrication,” Melton stated.

According to Melton, the car had to be stabilized before any work could be done.

“We had to stabilize the vehicle in order to get the driver out,” said Melton. “We used the air strut that was purchased last year with proceeds from the golf tournament. Once stabilized, hydraulic spreaders where used to open the door. The driver was then placed on a Stokes basket and brought to the roadway using a ladder slide.”

At press time, the name of the female driver was unavailable. Melton said no one was killed in the accident.
