South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley was in town last Thursday morning to formerly announce the Shaeffler Group’s intention to expand operations in Cheraw to the tune of $40 million. This expansion will create 190 new jobs for Cheraw, she said, “because of the work ethic you have proven here.”

Haley said the training programs INA have put into place by working with Northeastern Technical College, since the 1980’s, have helped prove this community’s commitment to excellence. A reputation, she said, that has made its way across the Atlantic Ocean.

Having traveled to Germany just six months after she took office, Gov. Haley said she met with Mrs. Schaeffler, the owner of the company, to talk about economic growth in our state. “Mrs. Schaeffler talked about the people in Cheraw all the way in Germany,” Haley said. “She speaks of you with such pride.”

This is a company that could expand anywhere in the world, said Haley, “and they’ve chosen to expand here because of the quality work you’ve produced.”

The expansion will allow for the production of a new innovation known as a “tappet for Nissan,” said Holman, “which goes in the valve train of the engine.”

Jim Lanter, Director of Operations with Schaeffler, told the crowd, which included almost every worker in the plant, that Cheraw’s workforce had “proven it’s self time and again,” and has maintained an 88 percent retention rate since 1988.

“You have what it takes to compete on a global scale,” Lanter said. “And the technology involved with this new product is as sophisticated as it gets.”

Phil Holman, director of human resources for the Schaeffler Group, said the expansion and additional jobs should happen within the coming year. In fact, he said, applications will be taken, beginning January 2013, through the South Carolina Works program. All new employees must complete the training program through Northeastern Tech, said Holman, which is typically 90 days.

“This is a cool day in South Carolina,” said Haley. “And Cheraw is a cool place. This may be my first trip, but it’s not the last. It’s just the beginning.”

Rite SuCa, Schaeffler is a company that leads by the females. The latest expansion of Schaeffler is in Russia, in the Ulyanovsk region. I dont know the manager of the production plant will be a female or not, but I can confirmed the fact that this is the very first factory of Schaeffler in Russia, the investment is costing over 2 million rubbles and another 450 jobs will be created. Schaeffler is known for quality and innovations, no doubt the market competition will be more intense for Schaeffler's arrival.

I could'nt agree more Webb17. I read that Schaeffler now employ around 74,000 people worldwide, which when you consider that it is still a private company, is very impressive. There should be more powerful women at the helm of such companies - in fact I see that Webb17 mentioned the factory expansion in Hungary. It should also be noted that two of the key jobs there have gone to women, namely Mathe Agnes as Purchasing Manager and Rita Kenyeres for HR. Come on girls - it's no longer a ' man's world ' !!!

It seems that Schaeffler is under going a series of expansion not just in USA but across the globe as well. Earlier they just announced there would be an investment of about $150 million euros in India, expanding 3 existing plants at Pune, Hosur and Vadodara. The Q3 performance report was published last week and there was an 4.2% increase in revenue globally, slightly 0.8% lower than the forecast, but it doesnt stop Schaeffler expanding. Now they are employing more people and building new facilities in Hungary, by the end of 2014 there will be over 2500 people working there. The key success of Schaeffler not just because they build quality products that can endue very harsh working conditions, but also they have made their products to be "in the region, for the region", all parts met the local requirements perfectly.

That must have been some meeting - the extra-ordinary Frau Maria-Elisabeth Schaeffler and Gov Nikki Haley. Two powerful women coming together for the good of the Cheraw community. I'm sure an extra 190 jobs will make a huge difference to the lucky 190 that are chosen. But as the article says, one of the great things about Schaeffler are the training programmes that they carry out. This is where the future of a company lies - making sure it's got the talent in place to take it foreward into the future. I am from the UK and the Schaeffler factory in South Wales not only employs around 250 staff but also has 7 engineering apprentices and most admirably holds every year an ' open house ' for schoolchildren, so both boys and girls can see what is available for them with the auto industry - something they might not otherwise have thought of. Keep up the good work Schaeffler. I would be interested to know what sort of jobs are on offer - does anyone know ?
