Back in the day, as it’s said, no one would have dared to put an intentional mark on Council “Coach” Porter’s beautiful new gym floor, especially when the gymnasium stood alone in a field on Highway 9. But soon, there will be permanent markings on the gym floor to honor a man who spent the majority of his 82 years on this earth educating, coaching, and advocating for others.

Members of the Chesterfield County School Board voted last fall to honor Porter, who died while still serving on the board, by naming the Cheraw High School gymnasium for him. Next week, the court floor will be painted to reflect its new name: Coach Council Porter Court.

A plaque that will hang in the gym was unveiled Monday afternoon. It was an emotional moment for family members and others who attended the dedication ceremony.

Porter’s daughter, Teresa P. Holland, sang a heartfelt melody to commemorate his legacy. Her voice was strong and clear as she sang, “May the service I give, speak for me.”

William J. Reid, one of Porter’s life-long friends, said, “Coach Porter was a man of very few words, but lots of action. He was a role model who gave direction to those who passed his way.”

William Watson, recently re-elected to the Chesterfield County School Board, served with Porter on the school for almost twenty years. “Coach Porter was a good man,” said Watson. “He was concerned about others. He was trustworthy. And I considered him my friend.”

Porter also possessed two qualities, said Watson, that are too often rare. “He was both educated and wise.”
