Student takes gun to Middle School
by Karen Kissiah
Staff Writer

Before anyone knew his secret, he began to cry and admitted his wrongdoing. Last Monday, a student at New Heights Middle School in Jefferson took a gun to school because he said he had been bullied long enough.

As the Chesterfield County School District has a Zero Tolerance policy, District Public Information Officer Ken Buck said the student, age 12, will be recommended for expulsion. Buck also said the school board has strict policies in place for bullying, and those reports will be handled in accordance with board policy as well.

“I feel sorry for the kid,” said Chesterfield County Sheriff Sam Parker, ” but there are consequences for carrying a loaded handgun to school.”

According to the incident report from the Sheriff’s Office, when the student began to cry, the teacher, not knowing the problem, approached by the student and a full confession followed. “The subject handed a loaded handgun with four bullets in the magazine and one in the chamber,” to his teacher, the report said.

The report said the student told his principal, and other authorities, he had hoped to “scare him into not bullying him anymore.” The gun, according to the report, “was his mother’s handgun that he took from her drawer.”

Iam a friend of the family..This child is from a great family very respectful well mannered. Yes he realize taking the gun to school was wrong if not he wouldn't have gave it to the teacher. As far as the bully they are still there but yet and still Chesterfield County is zero tolerance for bullying. Proper procedures were taken to let school officials know what was goin on nothing was done. I agree you dont no until you walk in a person shoes. Mother is a concern parent she was a sub at the school great church goin family.

What about the bully ? What was being done to this child that he felt the need to bring a gun to school? My kids went to this school and I for one can tell you, NOTHING was done to the bully!

You dont know what you will do until you walk in another person's shoes. We dont know about his home life, what was being done to him at school.

Bringing a gun no doubt WRONG Choice to make. Being 12 years old and tormented every day of your life, hard thing to deal with too.

Get both the kids some help , Hold the bully accountable as well as the child that brought the gun.

How in the world did the student get out of his house with his mom's gun? The bullying that was going on should have been reported to the Teacher when it first started so appropriate actions could be taken to resolve this problem. This is just not the child's problem, but it reflects on the school and his family. All of this should be taken into consideration before expelling the child from school. If and when the child ever shows up for school again, he will be so far behind in his studies, held back to repeat the year, and the bully will still be there!

Bullying is such a issue these days, Schools really do need to get a handle on this. Its been taken to a whole other level from picking on each other to bringing a gun because your scared! Wow!

Both of these kids need help.
