CHERAW – Two people have been killed after the pickup truck they were occupying was hit by an Amtrak passenger train Monday morning.

According to the S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) website, the accident occurred in the town limits near the intersection of East Market Street and Third Street around 8:30 a.m. Witnesses in the area, however, report they heard the sound of the impact as the train and truck collided closer to 7:45 a.m.

Chesterfield County Coroner Kip Kiser has identified the victims to media as 52-year-old Glenn Locklear and 57-year-old Barny Driggers, both of Cheraw. Kiser said they died as a result of trauma from the accident. There are reports that the two men were employees of the town of Cheraw.

The intersection where the accident occurred has a stop sign but no crossing guards or signals for motorists.

According to representatives from Amtrak, there were 244 passengers on board at the time of the accident, and none were injured.

The train was running from Miami to New York having left Miami Sunday with a scheduled arrival in New York this afternoon.

Passengers on the train at the time of the accident remained onboard until the train was released from the accident site, at around 1 p.m. Passengers will continue on to their destination.

Further details surrounding the accident remain unknown at this time. The crash is being investigated by the SCHP.

This is such a tragic event for the two city employees. I would think by now that crossings, such as the one they used multiple times a day, would have been secured with lights and guard rails. It saddens me that over the years this crossing has not been improved in support of those who cross in the area, be they vehicles or pedestrians. Let's keep safety a strong factor in Cheraw and do what we can to improve conditions.
