<p>Many newspapers during the 1880’s and early 1900’s would feature a special column each week to update the community ‘going’s on’ of others. Here at the Chronicle, we like to kid and say that this was where the idea for “Twitter” came from. In the Aug. 20, 1885 issue, of the entries reads: “The Purcell House: On our visit to Wilmington last week, we were elegantly entertained at this excellent hotel. The gentlemanly proprietor and manager treated us kindly…”</p>

However, in this issue from Nov. 18, 1885, the advertisement for a casket company is very obvious. Other early advertisers include Wrigley’s gum and other household names.</p>
