Smith employees to be cut

Just weeks after announcing the creation of 50 new jobs, A.O. Smith Water Products in McBee announced that the company will layoff up to 320 employees within the next eight months.

According to company spokesperson Ed O'Connor, layoffs will start around the end of July, when 80 full-time employees and 90 temporary employees will be let go. The remaining cuts will be made at the start of next year, as up to 150 employees will be released between January and March.

O'Connor said which employees will be laid off will be determined by the employee's number of years of service.

"What has happened here is we have decided to consolidate our residential and commercial water heater manufacturing plants into two primary areas," O'Connor said.
