One teenager was killed, two were airlifted to a Charlotte, N.C., hospital and a fourth was transferred to McLeod's Medical Center after a two-car collision three miles north of Cheraw last Wednesday.

Wendy Summer Matheny, 14, of Cleveland, S.C., was killed in the accident, according to Chesterfield County Coroner Donnie Baker. Baker said Matheny was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force trauma to the head.

According to Lance Cpl. Bryan McDougald of the S.C. Highway Patrol, the four teens were traveling east on Midway Road around 7:30 p.m. when the accident occurred. Matheny was riding in a 2001 Mitsubishi that was struck by a 2001 Chevy Blazer traveling behind it. The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 17-year-old from Cheraw, failed to yield right-of-way while trying to make a U-turn and was struck in the driver's side door by the Blazer.
