According to reports from the S.C. Highway Patrol, Michael Lynn Walden, 31, was stopped at a stop sign on Indian Branch Road when he pulled out in front of a 1995 Ford Escort being driven by 21-year-old Crystal Bowman of Bishopville.
Senior Trooper Ashley Mew said Bowman's car struck Walden's El Camino in its passenger-side door causing both vehicles to overturn and the El Camino to catch fire.
Mew said the vehicle carrying Walden and his son, Elijah English Demby, was burned so badly once the officers arrived they could not determine if Demby and Walden had been wearing seatbelts.
Mew added that Bowman, who was driving below the speed limit, was not buckled and was thrown from her car.
Demby and Walden were both pronounced dead at the scene, while Bowman was taken to Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville. Her condition was reported as seriously injured.
Walden was an employee of INA USA, while Demby was a kindergarten student at St. David's School in Cheraw. Both attended Zoar United Methodist Church.
Memorials for both may be made to St. David's School, P.O. Box 926, Cheraw, S.C., 29520, or Ace & T.J. Grin Kids, P.O. Box 37192, Charlotte, N.C., 28237. Grin Kids is a charity for terminally ill and handicapped children.
