"It was your usual Chesterfield-Cheraw wrestling match," Cheraw head coach Brad Porter said. "It came down to one or two matches that determined the outcome."
The match started with Chesterfield's Dan Hanna pinning Cheraw's Marquis Williams in the 130-pound division. The Ram's six-point lead was short lived. In the next match 135-pound Chesterfield grappler Tony Moser was disqualified for using a closed fist to try and escape a hold. Moser's goof cost the Rams two points and left Cheraw with a 6-4 lead.
In the next contest, Patrick Barefoot decisioned Josh Evans to push the Rams ahead 7-6. The Braves then rattled off three quick wins from two pin falls and a forfeit in the 160-pound class, putting them ahead, 24-7. Brandon Jacobs and John Ellsion recorded the two pins for the Braves, putting down the shoulders of Chip Gilly and Scott Parker respectively.
Chesterfield answered with four wins to regain a one-point advantage, 25-24.
Chesterfield's Daquan Ingram worked his way to a decision over Andre Garvin in the 171-pound class, followed by Ram Buddha Bridges pinning Charlie Brown in the 189-pound division. R.L. Stack took a forfeit in the 215-pound class, and heavyweight Joe Bragg defeated Cheraw's Carlos Grant by a decision in a closely fought match.
The Braves and Rams then split the final four matches, with Chesterfield recording two pin falls and Cheraw one and a decision. The final tally, 37-33, put the Rams on top.
Chesterfield's two pins were made by 112-pound Danny Curtis, who pinned Paul Chapman, and 119-pound Jay Gainey, who pinned Octavious Ellison.
Cheraw's two wins in the final four matches came in the 103-pound class as Dameon Pegues pinned Patrick Vaughn and in the 125-pound class as Donte Isaac decisioned Dave Michaud.
"I really expect it to be (Chesterfield and Cheraw) in the semifinals of the state tournament," Chesterfield head coach Lance Abernathy said. "I just hope we can get lucky enough to beat them one more time."
Last year, Chesterfield defeated Cheraw two times during the regular season, but the Braves came out on top when the two teams met in the playoffs.
