The Chesterfield wrestling team improved its regular season record to 13-1 with four dominating wins on the road last week.
The Rams were in Buford Jan. 20 with matches against the Yellow Jackets and Hartsville. Chesterfield opened things up against Hartsville, taking an easy 71-9 victory. Ten Ram wrestlers recorded pins in the contest, with nine of those pins coming in the first period.
The Rams responsible for the pin falls included Danny Curtis, Dave Michaud, Steven James, Jay Gainey, Tony Moser, Patrick Barefoot, Nick Dixon, Buddha Bridges, R.L. Stack and Joe Bragg.
The following match against Buford was just as lopsided: Chesterfield cruised to a 61-15 win. The Yellow Jackets donated 30 points to the Rams through forfeits in the match. Chesterfield's Bridges, Stack, Bragg and Curtis also chipped in six-point pins for the win.
Following the massacres in Buford, the Rams hit the road to Bennettsville last Thursday to lock up with teams from Marlboro County and Crestwood. Crestwood was Chesterfield's first victim, giving up two forfeits and seven pins in the 70-12 loss. Gainey, Moser, Bridges, Bragg, Dan Hanna, Scott Parker and Daquan Ingram recorded pins against their Crestwood opponents.
That set up the Rams' closest contest of the week, against grapplers from Marlboro County.
"Marlboro has gotten quite a bit tougher over the years," Chesterfield head coach Lance Abernathy said. "What they can throw at you that we can't is a physical specimen of an athlete in every weight class."
On the wrestling mat, brains can sometimes defeat brawn, however. The more-experienced Rams cruised on to a 57-24 victory. Recording pins in the contest were Curtis, Gainey, Michaud, Moser, Ingram, Stack and Bragg.
Following the cancellation of the Rams highly anticipated match against Rock Hill Wednesday, Chesterfield will wrap up its regular season with matches against North Central and Darlington Thursday and Lugoff-Elgin next Tuesday.
Thursday's match will be at home at 6 p.m. Next Tuesday's match will be at Lugoff-Elgin at 7 p.m.
