Cheraw High School senior Miles Thompson proved he still has the touch. Thompson was the individual champion for Class AA region 8 in the first round of the State SAT Competition.
Thompson, who scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT when it counted in October, was crowned the state's individual SAT champion last year.
This season marks his second year competing with Cheraw High's SAT competition team.
Team and individual winners advance to the upper or lower state finals Feb. 24-27 and then on to the state finals March 10, where state winners will receive trophies and medallions.
Also during regional competition, Dreher High student David Wang scored a perfect 118, helping his school win AAA region 5.
"This academic competition continues to provide our students with a fun and challenging environment for high achievement," State Superintendent of Education Inez Tenenbaum said. "Any time you see a perfect score during the competition, you know the students take this very seriously and work very hard."
Students from 125 high schools participated in regional competition over the past few weeks. They took a specially designed two-hour, 118-question exam that was divided into two sections of math and two sections of verbal questions.
