It's time for Congress to 'slim' down lawsuits

With the study released Tuesday by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Congress needs to hurry up and pass the bill that would prevent people from suing fast-food companies for making them overweight.

The report ranks obesity as the No. 2 underlying preventable killer in the nation. Tobacco still holds the No. 1 spot, but poor diet and physical inactivity is closing in fast. The number of deaths (400,000) in 2000 is a 33 percent jump over 1990, while tobacco-related deaths (435,000) increased only 9 percent over the same period.

These statistics will certainly spur obese money mongers to grab a lawyer and march to court with their physical evidence - McDonald's cheeseburger wrappers and empty French fry cartons - and ask to be compensated for medical bills dealing with their hypertension, diabetes and cancer. Not to mention the emotional stress of having to squeeze their oversized bodies into bathing suits every summer.
