Cheraw High School's Miles Thompson competed for his second consecutive state title at the state SAT Competition in Columbia Wednesday.

Results from that event were not available at press time.

Thompson advanced to the state finals after winning the Lower State's highest individual score during competition testing Feb. 24. Thompson was joined by the rest of Cheraw High School's SAT team who won its region for the sixth year in a row but failed to make it past Aynor to advance to the state SAT finals as a team.

In the individual finals, Thompson was scheduled to compete against the Upper State individual champion Caroline Nelson, who hails from Chapin High School.

Aynor was scheduled to battle it out with Chapin High School's SAT team to decide the State's AA team champion. Last year, Chapin defeated Aynor to claim the state title.

Other schools competing for team titles yesterday were Christ Church Episcopal School and Williston-Elko High School in Class A; Riverside High School and Dreher High School in Class AAA; and Lexington High School and Irmo High School in Class AAAA.

Dreher and Chapin are the only schools to have advanced to the state finals all six years of the competition. This is the fifth straight year Christ Church will compete in the final round and the fourth year for Lexington. Aynor and Riverside are making their third straight appearances. This is the second year in the state finals for Williston-Elko and Irmo.

More than 400 students from 35 high schools participated in upper/lower state competition at the end of February.
