James Walter "Smitty" Smith, 85, of Ruby died Saturday, April 24, 2004.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 2 at Smith Family Cemetery in Ruby.

Memorials can be made to Hospice of Chesterfield County, P.O. Box 293, Chesterfield, S.C. 29709.

Born in Baconton, Ga., Mr. Smith was a son of the late Seth Walker and Pearl Ford Smith. He was a retired mechanic with Delta Mills and a U.S. Army veteran. He and his wife owned Sarah's Snack Shop in Ruby for 10 years. He was married to the late Sarah Elizabeth Griggs Smith.

Surviving are five sons, James Allison of San Antonio, Texas, Charles "Sonny" Smith of Simpsonville, Mike Smith of Almond, N.C., David Smith of Cullowhee, N.C., and Daryll Smith of Ruby; four daughters, Gail Shoemaker of Austin, Texas, Debbie Wilkerson of Ruby, Kathy Sims of Cheraw and Angie Smith of Cheraw; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife, a son, Tony Smith, and three sisters, Lucille Martin, Juanita Shoppe and Bobby Maldovan.

Arrangements were entrusted to Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Inc. in Chesterfield.
