A Chesterfield County man was arrested last week after allegedly pointing a shotgun in the face of one person and firing shots at two others.

Chesterfield County Sheriff's deputies arrested 32-year-old Mathew Wilkes, of 79 Press Walters Road, last week after he was found standing in a yard on Ballard Road with a shotgun in his right hand and a bottle of liquor and a pistol in his left hand.

According to the Sheriff's Department incident report, Deputy David Lee was the first to arrive at the scene, where he found Wilkes standing in the yard holding his weapons. Lee reportedly instructed Wilkes several times to drop his weapons and get on the ground, but Wilkes is accused of telling the deputy to go ahead and shoot him. Wilkes finally complied with Lee's constant instructions to put the guns down.

Wilkes then refused to get down on the ground, until Deputy Troy Ellerbe arrived. According to the report, Ellerbe distracted Wilkes, and Lee sprayed Wilkes with pepper spray.

Once subdued by the spray, the deputies were able to place Wilkes in handcuffs and take him away with no further incident.

An investigation into the case found that Wilkes had pointed the shotgun in the face of one Ballard Road resident, before firing shots at two others. The two people Wilkes is accused of shooting at were brother and sister. Neither were hit by the gunfire.

Wilkes has been charged with aggravated assault, assault and battery with intent to kill, and malicious damage to personal property.
