Fifty-four-year-old Quincy Martin was pronounced dead at the scene after driving his CSX work truck into the back of a Chesterfield County school bus. The school bus was stopped on S.C. Highway 151 around 7:15 a.m. in front of McLeod Farms. Students were getting on another bus in front of it.
Two students and the bus driver were on the rear bus when it was struck. All three accident victims were transported to Carolina Pines Medical Center with minor injuries.
Lance Crpl. Bryan McDougald of the S.C. Highway Patrol said five other vehicles, including two tractor trailers, collided following the initial accident.
McDougald said the first tractor trailer jackknifed as it applied brakes to avoid the accident. A car following struck the braking 18-wheeler in the back. Another tractor trailer approaching the accident then slammed into the car that had stopped short of the jackknifed rig, causing the second 18-wheeler to also jackknife.
A car following behind the second tractor trailer also slammed into the back of it when it jackknifed.
McDougald said in all, seven vehicles were involved in the accident and nine individuals were transported to area hospitals for treatment.
