From LOCAL REPORTS

Brandon Blair, two-time State Champion in the AA Pole Vault, traveled to Eugene, Ore., at the end of July to participate in the National Junior Olympic finals in the Young Men's Division.

Blair qualified for this competition through a series of meets held earlier this summer.

At the State Junior Olympic meet held at Irmo High June 11-13, Brandon finished second with a vault of 3.96 meters.

He then moved on to the Region 3 Qualifying meet, which pitted the top five athletes from Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland against each other. Held at the University of South Carolina on July 7-11, Brandon finished third with a vault of 3.96 meters.

The top tree finishers from each region in each event then traveled to legendary Hayward Field at the University of Oregon to compete for the Junior Olympic Gold.

Brandon was one of 42 who had qualified. He finished 19th in the nation with a vault of 4.10 meters. He also finished ahead of the other Region 3 qualifiers at the national event.

Brandon has two more years to compete in the Young Men's Division. He will be going for his third gold medal in the State Track Meet next spring. He is hoping to possibly get an athletic scholarship in track and field and go on to compete at the college level after graduating Cheraw High School.
