Minister J. L. Drayton of Society Hill died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004 in a Florence hospital after an illness.

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23 from Christ Temple Holiness Church with Elders Wesley Belin and Patrick Usher officiating. Burial followed in St. John Temple Holiness Church.

Born in Bennettsville, Mr. Drayton was a son of the late Vander and Matilda Drayton White. He was educated in Marlboro County public schools and until retirement was employed at Becker Sand and Gravel of Bennettsville. Mr. Drayton was a member of St. John Temple Holiness Church in Society Hill.

Surviving are his wife, Lucille F. Drayton of the home; five children, Michael (Adriane) Drayton of Maryland, Carolyn (Charles) Jones, Pamela (Donnie) Shands and Angela Drayton all of Virginia, and Carolyn Hepburn of Fayetteville, N.C.; five step-children, Barbara (Sidney) Swinney and Johnny (Roberta) Ludd both of Society Hill, Zack (Doris) Fowler of Kuwait, Frederick (Elizabeth) Ludd of Orange, N.J., and Tara (Hampton) McNeil of Spartanburg; 21 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Lula McRea, Allie (Edward) Walker, Elizabeth Johnson and Ann (Jimmy) Prince all of Bennettsville; five brothers, James (Brenda) White and Leroy (Hattie Mae) White both of Brooklyn, N.Y., Albert Lee Drayton of Raleigh, N.C., and Johnny (Juanita) White and the Rev. Willie (Patricia) White of Bennettsville; six brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Arrangements were entrusted to Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home Inc.
