Born in Darlington County, Mr. Smith a son of Bertha J. Smith and the late Van Brailey and Louis Smith. He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County. Mr. Smith was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church. He worked for a number of years at Klopman Mills as a sewing machine technician. Earlier, he was a teacher at Marlboro/Chesterfield Technical College.
Survivors are his mother of Hartsville; his wife of 37 years, Mary Alice Green Smith of Hartsville; three sons, James C. (Margaret Hawkins) Smith, Darryl Miller and Reginald "Reggie" (Felicia Jeffery) Smith all of Hartsville; two daughters, Penny Boyce of Hartsville, and Tammy (Shaun) Stimpson of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Ricky Smith of Charlotte; three sisters, Ethelene (James) Smith, Edith Bruce and Louise (Albertus) Delaine all of Hartsville; his stepmother, Matilda Brailey of Hartsville; three stepsisters, Yvonne Montague, Delores (Mike) Patterson and Harriett Bacote all of Hartsville; persons raised as brothers and sisters, William (Viola) Jett, Ernest (Brenda) Jett, James Ernest Jett, Beaver Jett and Louvenia Graves: his mother-in-law, Lillie Mae Green; nine grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
