A Cheraw High School senior died in an automobile accident last Tuesday night in Marlboro County.

Seventeen-year-old Cassa Danyelle Messick was pronounced dead at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday after losing control of a 1997 Jeep about 10 miles north of Bennettsville.

Trooper 1st Class Sonny Collins of the S.C. Highway Patrol said Messick was traveling north on Lightwood Road when she ran off the right hand side of the road. Collins said Messick apparently overcorrected while trying to get back on the road, sending her vehicle off the left hand side of the road where it overturned several times.

Collins said the Jeep came to a stop after hitting a tree.

Messick was a cast member in the Christmas Play at the Theatre on the Green and attended First United Methodist Church in Cheraw.

Her family and friends say she had a love for music, drama and cats.
