Members of the Cheraw Police Department arrested one of "Carolina's Most Wanted" Saturday afternoon.

Twenty-year-old Demaize Raschiat Benjamin, who had recently been profiled on the television program Carolina's Most Wanted, was apprehended around 4 p.m. after leading officers on a foot chase along West Market Street.

According to Lt. Investigator Keith Thomas, Benjamin, of Cheraw, was wanted in Florence and Darlington counties for outstanding warrants of assault and battery with intent to kill and violation of probation and parole.

Thomas said Benjamin was known to frequent the Cheraw area, and Detective John James of the Cheraw PD received a tip Saturday that Benjamin was in town. Officers heading out to look for Benjamin passed him and 25-year-old Barry McQueen, also of Cheraw, traveling in a vehicle the other way.

When officers attempted to make a traffic stop, Benjamin jumped out of the car and ran.

Members of the Cheraw PD searched for Benjamin in the thick kudzu growing along West Market Street. They eventually found him lying in a field.

A search of the car Benjamin and McQueen were traveling in also revealed crack cocaine. Both were charged for possession of the illegal drug, and McQueen was also charged with simple possession of marijuana.
