A McBee High School student was charged with disturbing the school after he wrote a note threatening violence, said Major James Dixon of the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Department.

On Feb. 7, a threatening note was found in the boys' bathroom at McBee High School. The note threatened the student body, faculty and staff with violence, said Chesterfield County school officials in a press release.

The high school's administration “immediately notified” the school district leaders and the Sheriff's Department, it said.

The student, 18-year-old Ben Steen, turned himself in and was released on a personal recognizance bond.

Dixon said the student, who got fed up with “students picking on him,” threatened in the note that a shooting would take place.

Steen is suspended from school, said Dr. John E. Williams Jr. The act falls under the school's zero tolerance policy. The board will meet to decide on further action such as expulsion from school.

The investigation has been turned over to the Sheriff's Department.

“We were perfectly satisfied with the response of the sheriff and his department and the local police in McBee,” Williams said.

Law enforcement was not only thorough in their investigation, he said, but officers also offered a calming influence for the parents and general public.
