CHESTERFIELD - John Thomas “Jeep” Hurst, 70, died Sunday, June 4, 2006 at his home in Chesterfield.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 6 from St. Paul United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the Chesterfield Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Sanctuary Fund, St. Paul United Methodist Church, 305 W. Main St., Chesterfield, S.C. 29709, or to a charity of one's choice.

Mr. Hurst was a son of Roy L. and Madge G. Hurst. He graduated from Chesterfield High School and attended Wofford College. In 1955 Mr. Hurst joined his father in business at the Western Auto in Chesterfield. He became sole owner and operator until his retirement in 1999. He was active in the Western Auto Dealers Association and represented all Western Auto dealers in the southeast as a member of the Dealers Council.

Mr. Hurst was one of the first members of the Chesterfield Jaycees, was a charter member of the Greater Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce and served tenure as its president. He served on the Chesterfield “Great Town” Commission and was also a member of the local Carolina Bank Advisory Board, serving a term as its chairman. He served in the S.C. National Guard, was a Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge counselor, a trustee of the Chesterfield District Board of Education and was chairman of the first Chesterfield Area Advisory Council. A life-long member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, he served in many ways, including chairman of the official Board, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chairman of the Finance Committee and President of the United Methodist Men. At the time of his illness he was treasurer, a member of the Administrative Council and the Chancel Choir.

Surviving are his wife, Donna Davis Hurst; a daughter, Connie Hurst (Alan) Jeffcoat of Mt. Pleasant; a grandson, Hurst Alan Jeffcoat of Mt. Pleasant; a granddaughter, Caroline Faith Jeffcoat of Mt. Pleasant; two sisters, Mary Faith Hurst (Sam) Watson of Edgefield, and Linda Sue Hurst (Butch) Williams of Columbia.

Arrangements were entrusted to Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.
