CHERAW - John Otis Gillespie, 93, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006.

A funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14 from Smithville A.M.E. Zion Church with the Revs. Alton N. David, Dr. M.F. Harrington, James R. McLean and Charles Mack officiating. Burial followed in the Gillespie Family Cemetery.

Born in Chesterfield County, Mr. Gillespie was a son of the late James and Roxie Ann Crump Gillespie, and was the widower of Maggie McFarlan Gillespie. He was a member of Smithville A.M.E. Zion Church, where he was the father of the church. “Mr. Johnny” was a farmer all his life and would give to the community whenever he could.

Surviving are five sisters, Frances Carter of Greenville, N.C., Mae Belle Isaac and Annie Sellers of Cheraw, Dora Mae Floyd of Baltimore, Md., and Roxie Ann Poe of Washington, D.C.; a brother, James (Elizabeth) Gillespie Jr. of Cheraw; and a number of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Johnnie Jr. Gillespie; three brothers, Frank, Phil and Thomas Gillespie; and three sisters, Geneva, Jeanette and Tiny Gillespie.

Arrangements were entrusted to Grooms Funeral Home.
