First the Cheraw Marching Band, now the football team. It's been a fantastic year for Cheraw High School, with the Braves football team winning the 2A Lower State Championship game against the Newberry Bulldogs Saturday in Columbia.
This is the third time the Braves won the title. The first time was in 1979 and the second time was in 1993.
This was also the Braves third consecutive trip to the state championship game.
Nearly 5,000 fans traveled to William-Brice Stadium to witness the win.
While the Braves trailed during much of the game, the final minutes delivered new energy among the players that edged them ahead by four points.
The Tribe, the school's marching band, also won the state championship this year at band competition, making this a memorable year for students, parents and fans.
