In an effort to fight against drunk driving during the holidays, the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office teamed up with McBee and Pageland police departments and the South Carolina Highway Patrol for the Sober or Slammer program.

Officers conducted DUI checkpoints on various roads throughout the county during the weeks of Dec. 16 through Jan. 1.

During that time, officers found numerous drivers in violation of drinking and driving laws. Three people were arrested for DUI (driving under the influence) and nine for DUS (driving under suspension).

Officers issued 16 different drug violations and arrested two fugitives.

“This program has done really well,” Major James Dixon of the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Department said. “It really works when targeting those who may be under the influence.”

In total, 70 citations were issued and 25 people were arrested. Even though this is not the first time the program has been used, it is the first time that the local Sheriff's Office was involved.
