YMCA holds awards banquet

CHESTERFIELD - The YMCA of the Upper Pee Dee held its annual awards banquet on Tuesday night at the Southern Belle Restaurant in Chesterfield.

Attorney and YMCA volunteer; Tony Floyd was the Master of Ceremonies.

Awards were presented to the Upper Pee Dee Board of Directors and members from Chesterfield, Darlington and Hartsville branches. Also, inductions of new board members were sworn in to serve in 2008. New Board member officers who were sworn in represent the three branches of the Upper Pee Dee YMCA. James Fleming and Jack Mangum will serve as new board members in Chesterfield.

Awards were also given for three years of service as board members and volunteers. Among those eceiving awards were Wanda Scharstein and David Huntley of the Chesterfield YMCA.

Chesterfield YMCA President Mike Caskey, Vice-President John Douglas, Treasurer Johnnie McCright and Secretary Rebecca Tolson-Secretary, and all of the Chesterfield YMCA Board of Managers were presented plaques and pins for their three years of service and commitment to their positions.

The Chesterfield YMCA has 1,100 members. During 2007, the Chesterfield Family YMCA sent more than 12,000 letters of support to troops in Iraq over the holidays. The facility also added 800 sq. ft. and $22,000 worth of new equipment to its fitness center.

Dr. William D. Nicholson, Vice-President of University Advancement Coastal Carolina University, served as the guest speaker. Nicholson spoke of the importance of the work that the YMCA's all across the Pee Dee region is doing and complimented them for their achievements in the past.

"The YMCA is not about buildings and programs, but it is really about people. It is making sure that our children have values, because we are truthfully at war for our children. Our kids today experience peer pressure, and they have to deal with alcohol and drugs. We are fighting for their hearts and souls," said Nicholson.

Closing his speech, Nicholson stated, "When you have commitment, faithfulness and sacrifice, you will always touch someone else's life. Inspiring a child's life is what it is all about, and I want to thank all of you for giving out of love, your time and many sacrifices."
