CHERAW - Steve Wendell Harrington, 58, died June 14, 2008.

Funeral services were at noon June 21, at Pee Dee Union Baptist Church, Cheraw. Burial was held in Montrose Cemetery in Cash Community.

Steve was a son of the late Virginia Bernice Harrington Flowers and the late Melvin "Nep" Short, Sr. born Nov. 27, 1949. He received his formal education in Chesterfield and Marlboro counties. He graduated from Eastside High School in Bennettsville in 1969. While at Eastside High, he received vocational training in brick masonry. He worked as a brick mason and carpenter; worked in Marlboro County School District for several years; he was employed at Chesterfield General Hospital for a number of years; he was employed at Cheraw Yarn Mill and Burlington Industries, and before his health failed, he was self-employed as owner-operator of Harrington's Janitorial Service.

Steve accepted Christ at the age of 12 and joined Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Wallace, where he served as a member of the youth choir. He was also active in the youth department of Robinson AME Zion Church and was a member of the junior choir. In 1995, he joined Pee Dee Union Baptist Church in Cheraw.

He married Juanita Carter of Manning, and was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Donnie L. Short.

Surviving is his devoted wife, Juanita; a daughter, Tawanda of the home; three sons, Steve, Jr. (Jennifer) of Columbia, Jamie of Columbia and Shafer (Jelica) of Wallace; five grandchildren, Daja, Shania, Desirray, Zy'ere, and Shafer, Jr.; step-father, Roosevelt Flowers of Cheraw; step-mother, Katie Short of Greenville; four sisters, Shirley (Carson) Pegues of Charlotte, N.C., Mary Flowers of Cheraw, Diane (Robert) Perkins of Wallace, and Rosemary Hodge of Greenville; four brothers, Frank (Shirley) Flowers of Cheraw, Richard Flowers of Cheraw, Melvin Short, Jr. of Wallace, and Richard (Jean) Byrd of Hamlet; uncle and aunt, Rev. and Mrs. M.F. Harrington; cousins, William Morris (Linda) Harrington, Virginia H. (John) Covington, Earline (Elbert) Little, and Katie Diane Harrington all of Wallace and other relatives and friends.

Reid's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
