CHESTERFIELD -Superintendent Dr. John Williams addressed the newly-elected board members Jimmie Williamson and Shannon Burr during the Chesterfield County School Board's July 14 meeting.
The superintendent spoke on the responsibilities of board members and what is expected of them. According to Williams, board member responsibilities include selecting and evaluating the superintendent, reviewing the district strategic plan, determining board policies, adopting an annual district budget, employment of personnel, providing appropriate facilities, ratify contracts, procurement, selecting attorneys, setting up board structure such as (meetings, dealing with administration, parents and others, and advocating for the students, school district and taxpayers.
Williams highlighted school board policies, salaries, schedules, benefits, retirement, and photos for the new members.
"I want you to go out and praise the Chesterfield County School District," said Williams. "As a school board member, you are highly respected in the community. We are not a private school, we take everybody, so we want to do the best we can for our students, parents and administration."
Williams also encouraged all members to attend out of state school board conferences as often as possible.
"It is good to go to other meetings and be around people who are also on various school board," Williams said. "Hear and learn from those meetings some of the things you might can bring back with you, such as goals for the future years, and the reasons behind those goals."
Chairman Chad Vick thanked Williams for the orientation and welcomed to the school board.
In other business, the board approved a budget adjustment for June, which exceeded $5,000
