No one’s advertising free food, but downtown Cheraw is promising a virtual buffet of free entertainment for the 37th Annual Cheraw Spring Festival this weekend. From 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday, entertainers are lined up to perform at the Community Center, Laney Landing and Centennial Park, on the corner of Market and Second streets. Sunday’s events are scheduled between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Many returning food vendors, with Spring Festival favorites such as chicken gyros, funnel cakes and homemade suckers, will be here again, said Lisa O’Neal, festival coordinator for the Cheraw Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department.
Two of the best new things about this year’s festival, said O’Neal, will be the addition of more food choices at both the Community Center and Centennial Park, and lots more games for the children.
“Last year,” said O’Neal, “the kids games were a big hit.” This year, she expects them to be even bigger, and better.
Speaking of big hits, the beach band out of Charlotte known as the Tsunami Wave Riders, will be performing at the Community Center in the early afternoon Saturday. Information and listening samples are easily accessible on the web for this group whose musical influences include Harry Belafonte, Jimmy Buffett, Bob Marley, Don Ho, Baha Men, The Drifters, Kenny Chesney, Uncle Kracker and the Beach Boys.
